Biltong is a tasty and nutritious snack made from dried and cured meat, originating in Southern Africa.
The name biltong derives from the Dutch words bil (“rump”) and tong (“strip”).
Originally the indigenous people of Southern Africa, such as the Khoikhoi, preserved meat by slicing it into strips, curing it with salt and hanging it up to dry.
After European settlers (Dutch, German, French) arrived in Southern Africa in the early 17th Century, they improved the curing process by using vinegar and spices.
Biltong as it is today evolved from the dried meat carried by the Voortrekkers, Dutch-speaking residents of Southern Africa who migrated by ox wagon from the Cape Colony into the interior from 1836 onwards, in order to live beyond the borders of British rule, on a journey called the Great Trek.
Known for its irresistibly moreish taste, thanks to the quality of the meat used and the tasty combination of vinegar and spices, this healthy snack packs a punch - providing a great source of iron, natural protein (crucial for muscle growth as it restores our supply of amino acids) and vitamin B12 (which helps make red blood cells and maintains muscle).
As a family-run business, we take pride in delivering top-quality artisan Biltong.
Our product is handmade from locally sourced beef and carefully seasoned to create a delicious, high-protein snack.
